CartKeeper partnered with VowelWeb to build a scalable Shopify application that helps merchants recover abandoned carts through WhatsApp and engage shoppers throughout their buying journey.

VowelWeb developed an asynchronous backend using Google Cloud Pub/Sub and Firestore for reliable event processing and scalable background operations. The embedded Shopify admin was built with Remix and Polaris, while a decoupled WhatsApp architecture provided flexibility for messaging provider integrations.

The client envisioned CartKeeper as an all-in-one Shopify platform for helping merchants recover abandoned carts and engage shoppers through WhatsApp. The goal was to combine automated cart recovery, bulk WhatsApp campaigns, AI-powered shopping assistance, revenue tracking, and subscription management into a single solution.

The platform also needed simple QR-code WhatsApp onboarding, message testing, support for large stores, and multilingual experiences across English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German.

  • Reliable Shopify Event Processing:Ā Shopify sends highĀ volumes of checkoutĀ and order webhooksĀ that need toĀ be acknowledged quickly. Heavy database andĀ API operations performedĀ synchronously could delayĀ processingĀ and cause missedĀ events during peakĀ traffic.
  • Duplicate and IncompleteĀ data:Ā A single checkoutĀ can generate multipleĀ events, while someĀ payloads may lackĀ essential information suchĀ as checkoutĀ IDs or phoneĀ numbers, making reliableĀ cart tracking difficult.
  • Preventing Recovery MessagesĀ to Converted Shoppers:Ā A checkout mayĀ appear abandoned whileĀ the customer isĀ still completing theirĀ purchase. Sending aĀ recoveryĀ message after anĀ order has beenĀ placed can createĀ a poor customerĀ experience.
  • High-Volume ScalingĀ for Large Stores:Ā Customer segmentation,Ā bulk campaigns, andĀ dashboard operations canĀ involve thousands orĀ hundreds of thousandsĀ of records, creatingĀ memory, performance, andĀ cost challenges ifĀ handled synchronously.
  • WhatsApp Provider Migration:Ā The WhatsApp providerĀ needed to beĀ changed without disruptingĀ existing merchant connectionsĀ or active recoveryĀ workflows.
  • Safe Revenue Attribution and Billing:Ā Recovered orders needed to be tagged without overwriting existing Shopify data, while subscription and billing workflows needed to remain consistent when Shopify events arrived out of order.
StrategicĀ Solutions

To address these challenges, we implemented the following solutions

  • Improved Event Processing:Separated immediate Shopify event acknowledgment from background processing. Events are acknowledged quickly while database and API operations run asynchronously, improving reliability and preventing missed events.
  • Built Reliable Cart Processing:Added duplicate-event protection to prevent multiple recovery messages. Fallback handling and scheduled retries ensure carts are reprocessed when checkout, customer, or phone data is temporarily unavailable.
  • Added Conversion Verification:Instead of immediately treating every checkout as abandoned, carts are held briefly and checked against recent Shopify orders. Only carts without a completed order enter the WhatsApp recovery flow.
  • Designed for Scale:Moved resource-intensive operations to background jobs. Shopify Bulk Operations handle large customer segments, while streaming and batching process datasets efficiently without excessive memory usage. Dashboard and historical data queries were also optimized for faster retrieval.
  • Created a Safer WhatsApp Architecture:Separated WhatsApp provider logic from the core application, allowing providers to be changed without major code changes and supporting controlled migrations with rollback capability.
  • Protected Merchant Data & Billing:Preserved existing Shopify tags when adding CartKeeper attribution tags. Billing logic also handles out-of-order Shopify events to keep subscription status and related data consistent.
